We are excited to offer a Bumble Bee Box Workshop to the public on Saturday, April 24.  Time slots beginning at 9:30 am and run through until 3:45 pm. Pre-registration is required.  We suggest one bee box per household.

This is a Citizen Science bumble bee monitoring program associated with the Alberta Native Bee Council.  We have the kits and information available for participants for a fee of $10.

Within Medicine Hat, numerous non-native species have taken over our green spaces, gardens, and back alleys. Many of them are considered invasive.  Our goal is to help attendees understand the importance of removing invasive plants on their property, recognize and identify some of our common invasive plant species, and learn how to get rid of them.

In connection with the current Alberta Foundation of the Arts TREX exhibit at the Nature Centre, we are excited to offer a fun evening making inkblot mythical creatures and discussing the newest exhibit.

This creative project is being offered to young people between the ages of 11 – 16 on Monday, July 12^th at 7pm at the Nature Centre. Please pre-register so we can make sure we have the correct number of supplies on hand. We start making inkblots as a base and then turn them into mythical creatures. The cost is free, but donations are warmly welcomed.

MH Interpretive Program invites our outdoor nature-loving, moon rise watchers to call and register for our “Moon Rise Stroll” on Thursday, July 22, 2021.  We hope to catch a glimpse of the rise of July’s full moon, which is referred to as the Buck Moon. We will be strolling leisurely on one of our paved trails for this evening’s moonstruck meander.

You are invited to our Enchanted Story Time at the Nature Center! This event starts with the story "Come to the Fairies' Ball" by Jane Yolen. Then, we will make our way to the Enchanted Forest to search for magical creatures! 

This event takes place on Friday, August 6th at 9:30am. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their favourite fairy tale costume (please wear proper footwear for an adventure). Ages 4-7 recommended. Please have a parent/guardian present.

This year, bat appreciation week is October 24-31, 2021. To celebrate, we will be doing a kids program called Being Batty. Kids aged 4-7 are welcome participate in our bat themed program. Through reading and pretending to be bats, kids will learn some of the types of bats in Medicine Hat, what they eat, and what they do over winter. This hands-on program will be taking place outside, and is weather dependent. Each program will be around 45 minutes in length. Please call 403-529-6225 to register for a time slot.

This event will take place from 6-7:15 pm located at the viewpoint on the top of Echo Dale. We will talk about the different planets, stars, and major constellations that we can see in the night sky. We recommend bringing a blanket or chair to sit on while we watch the stars.

From 1-3pm. Come enjoy Métis dancing, fiddlers, and fire-cooked bannock. Hosted in Police Point Park by the Miywasin Friendship Centre. No registration required. 

It’s time once again for the annual fall snow geese migration spectacle. Every year thousands of snow geese and other waterfowl migrate through our nearby rural areas. For anyone who has not witnessed this magnificent display, it is a must see experience. And, for those who have, it is something that never fails to amaze.

The Interpretive Program will be leading a guided trip to view these magnificent birds on Saturday, November 5. On the trip, we will likely see other geese (Canada and white-fronted), tundra swans, ducks, grebes, coots, and maybe loons.

Those interested should meet at the A&W on Gershaw Drive (near the Airport) at 2:00 PM so that we may leave promptly at 2:15 PM. We will then caravan, to a location where snow geese are concentrated in large numbers. Depending on how long participants stay, we may not be back to town until 5:00PM. Please bring binoculars, cameras, and dress appropriately for weather conditions.

Spread some cheer this holiday season by making a Christmas card for a local senior! We will provide supplies and deliver the cards to Chinook Village and the hospital. Drop in to the Nature Centre anytime form December 6-16th. 

The MH Interpretive Program is hosting our very own holiday market at the Nature Centre! We have curated a unique variety of vendors with a focus on nature and handmade items! A perfect opportunity to find one-of-a-kind gifts, or something special for yourself! The market will run from 10am-3:30pm. We hope to see you!

You bet.On Saturday, January 7, the Interpretive Program (IP) and Grasslands Naturalists (GN) will conduct winter bird watching walks for those interested in finding out more about this pastime and identifying our local birds. There will also be information available about GN’s efforts to get Medicine Hat designated as a Bird Friendly City through Nature Canada. 

Join us for an evening of art and mingling. We are hosting the Young Artists Inspired by Nature art exhibit for the month of January. This includes work from students from McCoy High School, Medicine Hat High School, and Crescent Heights High School. We will be hosting a reception on January 11th at 7:00pm to celebrate these amazing artists! Mayor Clark will opening the reception with remarks at 7:15pm. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. 

MHIP, in partnership with the MHPL, are happy to have the annual Winter StoryWalk back in Police Point Park! This year's story is 'Mice Skating' by Annie Silvestro. The story will be up in the park. If you need any directing, feel free to stop in to the Nature Centre and a Park Interpreter will be happy to help! The StoryWalk will be up from Januray 27th-February 28th. 

Celebrate Family Day at Police Point Park with activities sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat. Ski and snowshoe rentals will be free during the event. If there is no snow, guests will be able to enjoy a scavenger hunt around the park. Snacks and hot dog roasting will be available along with wildlife kit building. Kiwanis Family Day at Police Point Park will take place from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Monday, February 20, 2023.

Artists! We want to feature you in our upcoming display! Mosaic of Medicine Hat is a community-built display featuring the professional and amateur artists of Medicine Hat and area. We want to see your interpretation of "What makes the city of Medicine Hat special to you?". All ages and skill levels are welcome! We will also accept any type of art: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, or poetry, the possibilities are endless!
This display will be up from April 1-May 1.
Artwork submitted by March 29 will be included in the display launch, but additional pieces will be accepted and added throughout April.
Submissions can be brought down to the Nature Centre in Police Point Park.

Bring your pre-school aged child (3-5 yeards old) on a walk, running from 1pm-2pm, and discover some of the colourful butterflies that live in Police Point Park.  Allong the way we might sing a song, read a story and do a craft activity.  Call the Nature Centre to book a place for your child.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Interpretive Program for a walk downtown to learn about some of the oldest buildings in Medicine Hat! We'll explore the architecture and stories behind the buildings from a time when Medicine Hat was a much younger city. The walk will begin at the entrance to Veteran's Memorial Park across from City Hall at 10:30am. It will take between an hour and an hour and a half. Remember to dress for the weather!

Come out to the Echodale viewing point on the evening of August 12th to watch the Perseid meteor shower with us! Known for their bright colours and fireballs, the Perseid meteors are considered the "best meteor shower of the year," by NASA. During the peak of the shower 50-100 meteors can typically be seen per hour!

We’ll be meeting at the Echodale viewing point on Saturday, August 12th at 11:30pm. 

The Echodale gates will close by 1:00am.

August 12th is when the meteor shower is predicted to have peak activity, but if conditions are not receptive to viewing the meteors then the event will be pushed to either the 11th or the 13th.

How to prep a hoop, beginner-friendly stitches, and more. You will even be able to take home your very own fiber art creation! Come on over and be a Beginner Beaver with us!

TrashCrafts is a monthly event series over the winter that features fun and useful crafts made from common household refuse! If you have some tin cans in your recycling and some old, metal odds-and-ends in the kitchen or garage, then you have everything you need to make a set of beautiful wind chimes for your garden or patio!

Clean out those junk drawers and save yourself a trip to the bins by heading to Police Point Park's Interpretive Centre on November 26th, 2023 ! The cost is $8 per participant but only $5 if you bring your own materials! Preregistration is required so please call (403)529-6225 to reserve your spot!

If you plan to bring your own materials: you will require, at minimum, 3 tin cans of slightly different diameters (so that they fit into each other). For instance: A 925g coffee can, a 796mL diced tomato can, and a 283mL standard soup can. Other recommended items include: flat/damaged cutlery, small salt/pepper shakers, colanders, washers/nuts, beads with wide holes, or anything clinky or clangy!

All children must be accompanied by an adult, and the recommended age for this activity is 8+ years old, due to the use of hand tools and presence of sharp metal objects. Come learn about the benefits of UPcycling over REcycling when possible, and get creative about saving the planet with TrashCrafts!       

Feed your feathered friends this winter by making a Pine Cone Bird Feeder with the Interpretive Program at Police Point Park. Stop by the pop-up craft table stationed on the path near the Nature Centre from 1-3pm on Saturday, December 23rd, while supplies last to chat with interpretive staff and make a feeder. 

It takes about 10 minutes to make a feeder and then they can be taken home to be hung for the birds. This craft involves peanut butter, meaning it is not suitable for those with allergies and may be somewhat messy. Registration is not required. We are asking for a $2 donation for each feeder to help cover the cost of materials. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

Want to help native pollinators AND participate in a fun citizen science project? Join us for one of four 1 hour time slots on December 30th between 10am and 3:30pm to build your own Bumble Bee Nest Box!

Come springtime, millions of queen bumble bees wake up from hibernation in Alberta, and begin looking for potential nesting sites. They want to find a spot to deposit their eggs that is dry and protected from the elements with food sources nearby. We are hosting this event at a slightly unusual time of year so that they will be ready when the snow melts and queen bees emerge to look for nest sites in early spring. At the end of the season, the boxes can be opened up to see if they have been used by a bumble bee and data can be shared with the Alberta Native Bee Council’s Bumble Bee Box Monitoring Program.

This is a family-friendly event. All tools and materials will be provided. The cost is 20$ per box and registration is required. Visit or call the Nature Centre (403-529-6225) to secure your spot. If the weather is nice, we will build outside the Nature Centre. Otherwise we will work in the theatre inside the Nature Centre.

Thanks to our partnership with the Medicine Hat Public Library, the annual Winter StoryWalk® in Police Point Park is coming back on Saturday January 27 - just in time for Family Literacy Day! The story will be Winter Dance by Marion Dane Bauer and it will be up in Police Point Park for your enjoyment until the end of February.

Join us for an exciting Trivia Night! It's a fantastic opportunity for anyone aged 18 and above. The theme of the night will be Nature in South-Eastern Alberta, with a couple of questions related to Canada. Don't worry if you're not a nature enthusiast, I promise you'll have a blast and learn something new. Plus, there will be some awesome prizes at stake, so come and test your knowledge with us!

All the necessary supplies will be provided, and you can enter by making a donation. To secure your spot, we kindly ask you to pre-register either by giving us a call at the Nature Centre or coming in person. The trivia night will take place in the nature centre theatre, accommodating a maximum of 20 people. We can't wait to have you join us!

Join us at the Nature Centre on February 22nd for a scenic walk through Police Point Park where we'll learn about the deer that live in our area, and how Hatters can foster a more respectful connection with urban wildlife.

The walk will leave from the Nature Centre at 10am and conclude around 11am.

Photography is welcome on the walk and sturdy, outdoor footwear is strongly recommended as we will be briefly going off the main trails. It is likely to be uneven and potentially snowy or slippery. This event is free to attend but slots are limited so please call the Nature Line to register!

The Interpretive Program at Police Point Park is excited to host Stuff Swap, a pop-up free store that brings community together to help the planet! Sharing items we no longer need has many benefits to our community including saving money, avoiding the consumption of energy, water and other resources used to produce new items, and making new connections. 

Bring clean, portable items that are in good repair (like clothing, books, small housewares, games, toys, etc) to this casual come-and-go event taking place at the Nature Centre any time between 1-4pm on Thursday, February 29th. Avoid bringing large, broken, stained, ripped, incomplete items or partially consumed products (like lotion or shampoo). We do not have the capacity to deal with large amounts of items, unfortunately.

No spare stuff? No problem! There is always enough to go around. Any items remaining at the end of the day will be donated to local non-profit organizations in our community.

Come and join us for a fun-filled afternoon of trivia! It's a great chance for anyone 10 years and older to participate. The theme will be "Nature near you," but even if nature isn't your thing, don't worry - you'll still have a blast and learn something new. There are also some awesome prizes up for grabs!

Spring is just around the corner and we're BUZZING with excitement for this upcoming event in our Pop-Up Pollinators series! Swing by Police Point Park for not one, but TWO unBEElieveable activities!

Make a comfy home for emerging queens by building a Bumble Bee Nest Box ($20) and participate in the Alberta Native Bee Council's bumble bee box monitoring project!

Then pop over to our Seed Bomb station ($2/bomb) where you can learn how to create a more beautiful and bee-friendly Medicine Hat with this fun method of seed dispersal! All the seeds we're using are native varieties that have been locally and responsibly wild-harvested!

Preregistration for bee boxes is required as supplies are limited, but we have lots of bee bombs to go around!

Does looking at a map terrify you?  Don’t know your up from down, never mind North from South?  This FREE program is for those who are complete novices to map reading.  No compass or GPS unit needed – only your eyes!

Join an Interpreter for a walk round Police Point Park, and learn how to use landscape features to find your way through the park and develop the confidence to participate in our next map reading challenge on Earth Day.

The Interpretive Program at Police Point Park will be hosting more fun Pop-Up Pollinator crafts in 2024. Butterfly Puddling Dish
Help a thirsty butterfly by making a puddling dish. Butterflies struggle to drink from ponds or birdbaths, and instead sip water from muddy/moist soil. While we are creating the puddling dishes, we will be sharing information about butterflies and other pollinators and other things to help them thrive in our neighborhoods.

Pollinator Water Station
To provide hydration for other pollinators like insects and birds, we will be building a self-filling water station. This craft will include a discussion of local native pollinators, their needs and flowers we can grow to feed them.

Bumble Bee Nest Box
When bumble bee queens emerge in spring they will be looking for a safe, dry, sheltered place to make a nest to start their family for the season. Bumble bee nest boxes are a citizen science project from the Alberta Native Bee Council and provide the queens with a place to call home. Each participant will build their own box and fill it with nesting material to take home for their yard.

Bug Snug Hands-On Demonstration (Fall 2024)
Many beneficial insects overwinter in the soil, leaf litter and hollow stems of plants in our yards. Once the daytime temperature warms enough to emerge in spring, they will get back to business by pollinating, keeping garden pests at bay, and more! By building a Bug Snug, we can provide a protected area in our yards from fall until spring. This hands-on demonstration will take place in the fall at the Pollinator Garden at Police Point Park to show participants what they need to build their own Bug Snugs at home. Who doesn't want to help a bug to be snug?!

Celebrate our planet and take action against plastic pollution with this years theme of Planet vs Plastic! Learn all about plastics and their impact on our environment with a series of hands-on activity stations along the scenic trails of Police Point Park! Let's make a positive impact together! All ages are welcome to join the fun and learn how small changes can make a big difference. See you there!

Are you looking to become a champion? Is it your goal to catch them all? Well do we have the walk for you! Join us in Police Point Park on April 13th at 1pm for a Pokémon GO inspired Nature Walk. We're learning all about citizen science and why researchers need help from everyday people like us to collect important scientific data around our cities and neighbourhoods. We'll learn how to find projects to take part in, and get to know iNaturalist: a popular and beginner-friendly citizen science platform. We'll learn how to make better quality observations to make the data we collect more useful to the researchers who need it, and then we'll go for a walk through Police Point Park to develop our skills with the help of a real-life guest scientist!

Presentation starts in the Nature Centre theatre at 1:30pm and the observation walk will depart from the nature centre around 2pm. The program will conclude at 3pm, though participants are welcome to stay and continue logging observations afterwards.

Do you like photography? Are you an enjoyer of nature and the lovely things in it? Do you want to combine these to passions? Then this is the walk for you!

Are you nature-curious but not sure how to start learning about local ecology? Bird watching is an excellent way to get outside and explore our beautiful prairies. In this interpretive walk, we will share helpful tips for bird nerds looking to identify our feathered friends. Co-hosted by a park interpreter along with one of Medicine Hat’s most prolific birders, Bird Nerds 101 will take place at Police Point Park on Saturday, May 18th, from 10:00am - 11:30am. We will be meeting outside of the Nature Centre and begin the walk from there. Participants are invited to bring their own binoculars and bird ID books, if possible.

Have you ever stumbled upon a mysterious animal skull? Are you curious about how experts identify different types of skulls? Join us for our pop up table event, Skull ID 101! You'll get a crash course in the terminology related to animal skulls, from horns and bones to beaks. Plus, you can test your knowledge with some fun mini games! See you there!

Sunday, May 26th, 2024 is the Spring Bird Count. We are looking for people to contribute to this important annual citizen science project. Anyone can sign up to be a field counter who walks or drives through their assigned area to identify and count the birds they see. Short on time? Even participating for one hour helps to provide valuable bird information to researchers about bird populations in our area. We can also pair new birders up with more experienced participants for guidance. 

Birders of all experience levels are welcome to sign up by calling the Nature Centre (403.529.6225). Let us know if there is a specific area you'd like to cover! Once you've signed up, we will send additional information (maps, reporting form, etc) in a few days.

On June 4th, from 2-3pm, join us as we delve into some of the questions raised in the teaser video from December. We'll be chatting about the interesting life that resides beneath the surface in our grasslands. So put on your walking shoes and come explore the park with us – who knows, we might even spot some wildlife!
This walk is suitable for visitors using mobility aids, so don't hesitate to join us!
Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. And don't worry, we'll still be going ahead with the walk even if it's raining – as long as it's not too lightning-ey or pouring cats and dogs!⛈

We had such a great response to this program during our Earth Day celebration that we've decided to bring it back for another go! If you missed out on trying "Honey, I shrunk the plastic" on Earth Day, now's your chance to join in the fun.
During this hands-on activity, we'll walk you through the process of creating your own "shrinky dinks" and you'll get to witness the magic as your plastic creation shrinks down to 1/3 of its original size! Join us for a gentle amble along the Seven Persons Creek in the Saamis Archaeological Site to discover, and learn about the wonders of this outdoor treasure together.  Meeting under the Saamis Tepee at 11am, we will walk the loop through the Archaeological site and explore the history along with the flora and fauna that make this area a hidden gem. 

Please remember to dress for the weather, even the rain!

This walk is suitable for all, and will be taken at a relaxed pace so that we can enjoy the natural beauty of this area.

It will be available for viewing in the park from July 16th to August 31st. We are pleased that our continued partnership with the Medicine Hat Public Library has made another StoryWalk® possible.
After completing the StoryWalk®, readers can come visit the Nature Centre to claim a prize token that can be redeemed at the Medicine Hat Public Library. Tokens will be available during our regular business hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Come meet your new favorite hidden path and learn about the local environment of Medicine Hat. This series of two walks will feature two paths in the city and provide information about our local ecology!

The walks are as follows:
•    Cotton Wood Forests: Taking place on August 3rd from 9:30am to 10:30am, this guided walk will take participants on a unique trail just below the Ranchlands neighborhood through a cottonwood forest. While showcasing the path our interpreter will be discussing the origin of the cottonwood forests and some challenges that they face today. We ask attendees meet our interpreter at the end of Ranchlands blvd NE where the walk will begin.
•    Urban Stream Ecology: Taking place on August 17th from 9:30am to 10:30am, this guided walk follows along a stretch of Ross Creek just behind the historic Medalta potteries. Our interpreter will be discussing the ecosystem of creeks that run through urban areas! This walk will meet at the baseball diamond parking lot in Strathcona Park.

Maps of meeting locations are included in the poster and on our social media!

“I’ll take Eats, Shoots, and Leaves for 300, Alex.” Put your nature knowledge to the test with this game show-themed event at Police Point Park! It’s Nature Jeopardy, hosted by Alex Trebuck, Tuesday, August 13th, with two time slots (7-8pm and 8-9pm). Teams earn points by responding with the question that fits the answer in a variety of nature-related categories. The team with the most points at the end wins a prize!

Everyone is bound to learn something new about the natural world in which we live. The cost to play is only 10$ per team, so gather 3-5 nature-lovers and call the Nature Centre to register for a time slot today! Children 13 years and older are welcome to join in the fun.

Have you noticed the orange flagging tape tied to some of the plants in the park? This tape is marking an invasive plant slated for removal: Common Buckthorn. We are hosting a free public event to share information about this and other invasives in the park. Join us Sunday, August 25th, from 1:00pm - 2:30pm as we identify Buckthorn, and the native plant is closely resembles (Chokecherry), and spend a bit of time doing some hands-on control. One of the Buckthorn Boys, Gerry from @Grasslands Naturalists, will be the co-host. Participants will receive a free copy of the ID book Invasive Plants of Alberta.

In this interpretive walk, we will learn how water has shaped our landscape, and how it will continue to change our landscape in the future. Why is a prairie forest so special? Echodale Ecology will answer this question and more. Starting from the viewpoint parking lot, we will follow the flat, laid trail to take in the panoramic views along the South Saskatchewan River on Wednesday, September 4th, from 10:30am - 11:30am

This Sunday, November 3rd, join the Interpretive Program for a free family-friendly Nature Walk from 1:00 - 2:30 pm in Police Point Park! We will be exploring the park while looking for signs of insects and what they do in fall/winter. At the end of the walk, we'll visit the Pollinator Garden and share some ideas for helping beneficial insects in our own backyards. No need to register, but if you have any questions, give us a call at the Nature Centre (403.529.6225). Please dress for the weather as this public event will be held outdoors.

Family-friendly Nature Walk to look at and learn about lichen, some of the neatest symbiotic organisms on earth. We will talk about some of the different types of lichen that can be found in the area and the important, but often underappreciated, roles they play in a healthy prairie ecosystem. Meet out front of the Nature Centre at 2:00 pm to join this free and fascinating guided Nature Walk.

Dating back to 1900, the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is the longest running citizen science project in North America. Each year flocks of bird enthusiasts go forth with binoculars, bird books and clipboards to identify and count local populations. The data collected is used to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation efforts. 

This year marks the 43rd anniversary of Medicine Hat's participation in the CBC and the count will be taking place Sunday, December 22nd. There are several ways to participate including walking, driving or monitoring at a bird feeder, and new bird counters are always welcome. There will also be a Potluck Dinner at the Nature Centre after the count! Dinner at 5:30 PM, doors will be open at 5:00 PM. Members of the public who did not participate in the count are definitely welcome to join in the potluck and bird banter! Join us for a fun afternoon of creativity at our Felt Ornament Making: Beaver edition! For just $10 per person, you'll receive all the materials you need, and you’ll leave with a charming ornament to show off at home! Participants must be 16 or older, and we do ask that you pre-register by calling 403-529-6225 or coming down to the centre in person. Mark your calendars for December 7, 2024, from 1-3pm. We will explore the wiggly and wonderful world of our wormy friends in this family-friendly public program. Where do worms go in the winter? How long do they live? Why do they come out of the ground when it rains? What kinds of worms live here in SE Alberta? We will share the answers to these questions and more. There will also be live worms! This program will be held in the theatre at the Nature Centre.

Saturday December 21st, 2024 is the day of the Winter Solstice! Join us at Police Point Park to observe the sunset on the shortest day of the year from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. We will be meeting in the theatre with chai, peppermint tea and hot chocolate available by $2 donation starting with a simple demonstration of the Winter Solstice. We will then learn about how cultural traditions worldwide are influenced by nature and the changing seasons, recognizing the importance of light for survival. 

Don't forget sunglasses and hope for sunny weather!

EVERYONE WELCOME! Join us for an evening of art and mingling to celebrate the high school artists who contributed to the annual Young Artists Inspired by Nature exhibit. The reception will be Thurs Jan 9 from 7-9 pm. The display will be up from Dec 27 to Jan 31. 

Join our guided, family-friendly Nature Walk looking for local birds while participating in a fun citizen science project! We will learn how to use binoculars and field guides as we practice bird identification in Police Point Park. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars, if possible. This month, the program is called 'Walk This Way' and is looking at animal tracks in the snow. This one-hour program will run from 10:30 am - 11:30 am, and the meeting place is the bandstand in Kin Coulee Park.  It is a FREE to attend program, however, registration is required.

This guided Nature Walk will take place at Police Point Park where we will walk along the river and discuss common behaviours, features and functions of wintering fish found in the South Saskatchewan River.

Huge thanks to people who attended the first Wintering Fishes walk!

We will meet at the Nature Centre at 2:30 on Friday January 31st 2025, for an hour long walk where we will discuss the threats these fish face, and the important ecological role fish play, focusing on why we should care about health of our aquatic ecosystems.

Participants are encouraged to bring any enthusiasm or expertise about the South Saskatchewan River, and don't forget to dress for the weather! 

SHAPE (Safe Healthy Active People Everywhere) is an Alberta wide, non-profit organization that promotes active travel throughout Alberta.

The Interpretive Program is participating in the 'Winter Walk Day' by holding a one-hour walk in Strathcona Island Park.  The Winter Walk Day encourages Albertans to get outdoors and be active in the winter.

In 2024, more than 100,00 Albertans participated in walks all across the province, so let's increase that number for 2025!

The meeting place will be the parking lot at the boat launch in Strathcona Island Park, and we will walk a loop to the Heritage Pavilion and back. The walk begins at 10:30 am and it is hoped to be back at the parking lot no later than 11:30 am.

This is an amble, not a sprint, so feel free to bring a hot drink and some friends.  The interpreter will be happy to answer any questions that you may have about the flora and fauna of the park, or maybe you would like to come and meet new people!

Bring your camera or binoculars if you want.  You never know what you may see on the walk!

No Leaves? No Problem! Explore some of the plants that can be found in the winter landscape while learning practical identification skills! Join an interpreter at Police Point Park on Sunday, January 26th from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm for this family-friendly guided Nature Walk. We will be meeting outside of the Nature Centre and begin the walk from there. Bring your Plant Identification books if you’ve got them.

The Winter Plant ID Walk is a free public program, and registration is not required. The walk will proceed regardless of weather, so dress appropriately!

We see them nearly every day throughout the city, but how well do we really know them? Come join us at Police Point Park for a Nature Walk where we’ll dive into all things deer! We'll explore fascinating topics like what defines a deer, what they like to munch on (you might be surprised by the answer!), tips for distinguishing between mule and whitetail deer, and so much more! This program is free to attend, no registration required. Taking place Wednesday February 5th from 2:00-3:00pm.

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is excited to announce your opportunity to get involved in a global Citizen Science project, without leaving your home!

In support of this project, we will be running a FREE training session on Saturday February 1^st, from 11 am – 12 pm for anyone wishing to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count which runs for four days from February 14^th – 17^th.  Come along to the Nature Centre and do some birdwatching both inside and outside to learn some simple bird identification tips.

We will also be learning how to use apps like Merlin and eBird, so please download these apps before you arrive.  These apps are free to download, but do require you to setup an account, and download a bird library for the area before you can use then.

Whether you participate during all four days of the Great Backyard Bird Count, or just one, you can take as little as 15 minutes to contribute to this research.  All you need to be able to do is identify a few birds, count them, and then submit your results! Using phone apps like eBird or Merlin to submit your data makes the count so much easier.

There are also FREE to attend, one-hour events organised by Cornell Lab, Audubon, Birds Canada and Wild Birds Unlimited that you can also join to learn more about participating in this project.  More information can be found at www.birdcount.org

Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program for an educational walk about safe wildlife interactions – specifically coyotes. Each animal plays an important role in a balanced prairie ecosystem, and there are several commonly held beliefs about coyotes that must be addressed.

On this guided Nature Walk, we will be sharing information about their diet, lifecycle behavior and habitat as well as where we might see them in the park.

This program is perfect for nature-lovers looking to gain skills and confidence when exploring the great outdoors.

Meet at the Nature Centre in Police Point Park for an hour-long walk starting at 2:30 pm on Friday, February 7^th, 2025.

We are continuing our ongoing series of programs for young children ages 2–5 years, called the Discovery Tree.  The February program will be taking place in Strathcona Park, from 10:30 am – 11:30 am on Wednesday, 12th February.

This imaginative program will have a whimsical and fun approach with a hands-on nature experience for all the preschoolers involved.   Registration is required for this program and all children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult.

We will be exploring some of the trees that grow in the park; looking for the plants and animals that grow and live around then; listening for the ‘heartbeat’ of the trees; and doing some bark rubbings.

This FREE program is for those who are complete novices to map reading.  No compass or GPS unit needed – only your eyes!

Join an Interpreter for a walk round Police Point Park, and learn how to use landscape features to find your way through the park and develop the confidence to participate in our next map reading challenge on Family Day.

With this skill mastered, you could then build on your new-found ability and participate in some of our other programs such as Geocaching – an outdoor scavenger hunt where you use GPS coordinates to navigate through the landscape.

This program does require registration, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Have you ever found yourself wondering, "Why do owls bob their heads?" or "What’s with cats zooming around at 2 AM?" or "Why do birds of prey sometimes dive at people?" If so, we invite you to join us at the Nature Centre on Wednesday, February 26th, from 1-2 PM with your burning questions! Whether you're curious about wildlife or pet behaviours, we'll do our best to provide answers. We'll be gathering in the Nature Centre Theatre room, and even if you don’t have any questions but just want to learn something new, that’s perfectly fine too! To mark the International Day of Zero Waste, MHIP is excited to be hosting Stuff Swap: a pop-up free store that gives new life to old items and keeps things that are still useful from ending up in the landfill.

On Sunday, March 30th, starting at 1:00 pm, bring a few (5 or less) clean, portable items in good repair (like clothing, books, small housewares, games, toys, etc) to this come-and-go event at the Nature Centre. The cut-off for donations is 3:00 pm and the event will wrap up at 4:00 pm. Check out what others have donated and you may find some treasures to take home. No spare stuff? No problem! There is always enough to go around. 

Large, broken, stained, ripped, incomplete items or partially consumed products (like lotion or shampoo) will not be accepted. If it can’t be easily carried by one person, it is probably too big. Please avoid bringing boxes/bags full of multiple items as this pop-up event does not have the capacity to deal with large amounts of stuff.

With the spring season approaching, old and new plant growth has been visible throughout the park. We will be looking for and taking note of invasive species remaining from last season and where they might start growing in the area.

Ever heard of the Southeast hill trail? Maybe you walk it all the time! Join an interpreter on Friday April 25th as we explore one of the scenic views in Medicine Hat! This area overlooks some unique historical locations and has beautiful woodland scenery.

If you are interested to discover a new walking trail, or to learn more about the history and ecology of this scenic view please feel free to join us for this free public program!

We will be meeting at the end of 11th st SE and walking from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. Please prepare for a 1.2 km walk that contains some hilly terrain.

Join an interpreter in Kin Coulee Park - Meeting at the Kinette Picnic Shelter to learn about a local wetland! This program will be partly a talk and partly a physical activity. We will be discussing the coulee, the plants that grow alongside it, and how they affect the landscape. We will discuss what is in the water itself, what is native, and what has been introduced by people. We will identify the local flora and fauna, then perform a "pond dip" with see-through Tupperware and examine what we find. While respecting the wildlife we encounter, we will look with a magnifying glass to inspect the insects and other creatures we come across together. We advise people to bring bug spray, clothes + shoes they don’t mind potentially getting dirty or wet, and sunscreen! We look forward to seeing you May 13^th from 1:00-2:00pm.

The blossoms are finally blooming and the bees are buzzing! Now that spring has arrived, join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we explore the beautiful world of bees and blossoms on a fun, family-friendly Nature Walk! Meet outside of the Nature Centre in Police Point Park on Thursday, May 15th, 2025 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm.

This is a free public program and registration is not required. Please dress for the weather as this walk will proceed rain or shine.

Come take a journey back through time with this Geology Walk on top of Echo Dale Regional Park. Find out how the area has changed and how this change is reflected in the landscape.

The walk is free to attend and no registration is required. Please wear sturdy footwear as the trails can be uneven.

Meet at the top parking lot that overlooks the river basin. The walk is from 1:00-2:00pm. Hope to see you there!

Trees on the prairie are such an unusual sight, and yet we have them all along the river. It is quite a curious thing!

Join an interpreter for a walk through the cottonwoods in Strathcona Island, and learn about the unusual life cycle of this plant, how the forest has developed along the river corridor, and why these forests are so important for life, especially the wildlife.

The meeting place will be the car park beside the children's play area on Saturday May 17 from 2-3 pm.

Please bring some water, dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy footwear as we will be going off-path.

Feel free to bring your camera or binoculars with you, as you never know what you may see on the walk!

We're excited to be hosting a shoreline litter picking event along the South Saskatchewan River! Join us at the Riverside Parking Lot in Police Point Park on May 31st from 1:00-2:00 pm. We’ll have some light snacks and refreshments for volunteers afterward! Come learn about our local watershed, why it’s so important to keep it clean, and how you can help protect the animals and plants that call it home. Registration is not required; bags and gloves will be provided!

We will talk about strategies to successfully build healthy soils and the benefits of supporting the plethora of organisms that call soil home. The Interpretive Program welcomes the public to our upcoming program: Evening Coyotes! A night of storytelling awaits… Coyotes are an important part of the prairie ecosystem and are North America’s most vocal land animal, making them the perfect topic for an evening program. We will be sitting around the firepit behind the Nature Centre in Police Point Park starting at 8:00 pm on Friday, July 11th. Hopefully we will get to hear these song dogs as we share some stories!

Come down to Police Point Park from July 1st-31st, 2025 to enjoy our summer StoryWalk®. This year’s story is Let's Go! (haw êkwa!) by Julie Flett. Once you read the story you can come into the Nature Centre to get a token to trade for a prize at the Medicine Hat Public Library! 

Love exploring the great outdoors? Curious about the plants and animals that surround us? The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is hosting a week-long bioblitz from July 13th - 19th, 2025. A bioblitz is a citizen science project that aims to record as many different species in a designated area as possible during a set window of time. 

Anyone new to iNaturalist or bioblitzs can join one of 3 free guided walks on Sunday, July 13th (launch day). These will start at 10 am, 1pm and 3 pm from outside of the Nature Centre and provide participants with everything they need to contribute to the Medicine Hat Bioblitz project. This project is made possible in part thanks to the Land Stewardship Centre of Canada.

Registration is not required to participate, but donations to our non-profit organization are always welcome. Hosting a BBQ without single-use plastic waste is not only possible, it’s preferable! In an effort to gather community while still being friendly to the planet, Roots Refillery and the Interpretive Program have combined forces. Join us for a complimentary BBQ on Saturday, August 2 from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm in Police Point Park thanks to a generous sponsorship from Metz Insurance. 

In addition to the BBQ, this complimentary outdoor event will have several local vendors who are taking action to promote sustainability in our community. The Interpretive Program will also offer fun, family-friendly activities throughout the event. Our goal is to help empower people to make easy changes to reduce single-use plastic waste in their own lives.

Crossing our fingers for suitable weather! If you weren’t able to join us at the Sun Art Station during our Earth Day celebration, no worries! We’re excited to invite you to a drop-in Sun Art program at the Nature Centre in Police Point Park from 1:00-2:00pm available while supplies last. The program is by donation and takes about 15 minutes. No registration is needed. We’ll chat about all the wonderful things we can do with the power of the sun while creating some unique art pieces. We look forward to seeing you there!

Great gardens are grown from the ground up! To align with our current display, A Story of Soil, the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is hosting a pop-up Soil Testing for Gardeners station. Swing by our table on the trail in front of the Nature Centre in Police Point Park from 2:00 - 3:00 pm on Tuesday, August 5th to dig into how and why soil testing can help your garden grow. Bring a sample of garden soil (approximately 1 cup) and a straight-sided jar with a lid (if possible) for some fun, hands-on learning about some of the ways to test and improve the soil in your own backyard. 

Have you ever been curious as to why we have Pelicans in Alberta? Do they really fly with their mouth full of fish and water?

Come for a walk in Police Point Park along the river from 11am-12pm August 26^th, where we’ll try to spot some Pelicans. Let’s learn what they’re up to in Alberta! Meeting at the riverside parking lot. No registration required!

Join us on Wednesday August 27th from 8:00pm-9:00pm for a Nature Walk. We'll chat about the animals that venture out at night in our area, exploring which ones are truly nocturnal and which are just opportunists. We may even have a few surprises in store for you… Bring your curiosities and questions for this thrilling evening walk!

We will meet outside the Nature Centre, light sources will be provided, please do not bring your own.

Don't forget to bring some good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather, as this walk will go ahead rain or shine! Be sure to give us a call ahead to register, as spaces are limited. And the best part—this walk is completely free!

Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we explore the wonderful world of bats

Do they suck human blood? Do they get tangled in your hair? Are they blind? We will share the answers to these questions during this family-friendly public program. Hopefully, we may see some bats, and maybe even hear them!

The walk will begin from the front patio of the Nature Centre on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025 from 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM.  Please do not bring a flashlight to this walk.

Does your child have a favourite colour?  Let’s see if we can find it in the park!  Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we explore the wonderful world of colours in nature! Mother Nature produces so many amazing colours, even here on the prairies.  Let’s see how many we can find!

This family-friendly walk, which is aimed at children aged 2-5 years old, will test their observational skills as we take a mindful walk through the park. If you accept this challenge, bring your little adventurers down to the Nature Centre on Thursday, August 21^st, 2025 from 10:30 am – 11:30 am.

This is a free public program, and registration is not required.

The Interpretive Program and Youth Eco-Stewards, an initiative of Invasives Canada welcomes you to our upcoming BioBlitz! Join us for a guided walk on Wednesday September 3rd, 2025 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm and learn about how to participate in our self-guided BioBlitz in Police Point Park with a chance to win some cool prizes. We will be meeting at the Nature Centre in Police Point Park.

BioBlitzes provide an opportunity to learn about native and invasive species with other nature enthusiasts! Observations gathered create a snapshot of the variety of life found in an area, contributing to a citizen science project that supports researchers. This BioBlitz uses iNaturalist, a mobile app that allows you to upload observations directly to our Biodiversity hunt project. This BioBlitz runs from September 3rd – 24th 2025.

Participants can enter a ballot for our prize draw that will take place at the Nature Centre in Police Point Park on Thursday, September 25th 2025.

Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we explore the intriguing world of freshwater ecosystems! How do we know if a waterbody is heathy and clean? What lives in the water? How do we assess water quality? We will share the answers to these questions and more during this family-friendly public program. Come along and be a freshwater scientist! Meeting in Kin Coulee, at the pond beside Ajax Coulee on Saturday, 13^th September 2025 from 10 am - 12 pm.

This is a free public program; however, registration is required.

Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program on a guided journey through the vibrant plantscape of Ross Creek Coulee. Starting in East Glen, a Park Interpreter will highlight some of the native, naturalized and invasive plants in the area as we amble along one of the loveliest trails in the city. This public program is taking place Sunday, September 7th, 2025 from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm and participants are invited to bring any plant ID books or field guides they may have to follow along (this is optional). 

The Plants of Ross Creek Coulee walk is free to attend but registration is required. To register, call or come into the Nature Centre in Police Point Park, which is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The trail system that we will be walking along is rather hilly in sections and may not be suitable for people with limited mobility. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, bring water to drink and wear appropriate footwear. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This public program is made possible in part thanks to the @landstewardshipcentre of Canada.

Moss Piglets, also known as Tardigrades or Water Bears, are micro-animals that live all around us. These tough little creatures can also survive in the vacuum of space, the deep sea, the Antarctic and in boiling water! Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program on a family-friendly walk in Police Point Park to explore the wild world of Moss Piglets on Sunday, September 14th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Hopefully we will even find some moss piglets on the walk to look at under the microscope!

Moss Piglets in Space is free to attend but donations to our non-profit organization are always welcome. Registration is not required.

Join us on a walk to explore Connaught Pond 672 College Dr, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 7J1. We will chat about the animals that like to call our ponds home, which plants take root there, and what challenges they face. We will discuss the ponds interaction with our ecosystem and local watershed. There are so many fascinating things for us to discover together! The program requires registration, but it’s completely free to join.

Moths in the Moonlight is a nighttime nature program that will literally shine some light on the magnificence of moths. Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we attract and observe moths using several types of live traps and techniques. We will be meeting at 9:00 pm on Saturday, September 27th, to set up the traps and talk about moths and the role that they play in the ecosystem. The program will be hosted off-site in the Kensington neighborhood and will end at 10:30 pm. 

There are limited spots available for this public program and we are asking for a small fee ($5/person) to cover the cost of the equipment. Registration is required as spots are limited. Are you looking for an activity to do after work or class? The Interpretive Program invites you to our upcoming event: After Hours Nature Walk! Everyone has nightly routines that help them prepare for the next day, but what do plants and animals do after hours? Come down to Police Point Park on Wednesday, October 1^st, 2025 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm for a free evening Nature Walk with an interpreter to learn more!

What animals live in Police Point Park, and what do their homes look like? Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we delve in to the world of who lives where. Do ants live in trees? Do birds only live in nests? Does anything live in those dead leaves?

Bring your pre-school aged children on this Nature Walk as we explore the park and the animals that live here.  Skip, jump, wriggle or flutter your way down to the Nature Centre on Friday, September 26th, 2025 from 10:30 - 11:30 am.This program is made possible through funding from the Land Stewardship Centre of Canada.

In the lead-up to World Migratory Bird Day, the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is hosting Birds on the Move, a migration-themed Nature Walk in Police Point Park. Our city is located within one of the four major flyways in North America, which means we are fortunate to see a wide variety of bird species at different times of the year. This program aims to celebrate our flying friends and their incredible journeys while sharing simple strategies to make our cities more bird-friendly. Meet outside of the Nature Centre at 3:30 pm on Thursday, October 9th, 2025 for this free 1-hour public program. Registration is not required. 

Do you have a little one interested in art? Or perhaps you’re interested in it yourself! We’d love for you to join us for our Nature Art program, where we’ll explore the world around us while creating art inspired by and using nature! The best part? It’s free to attend, but spots are limited, so registration is required. Just give the Nature Centre a call at 403-529-6225 to sign up!

We will be meeting in the Nature Centre on October 8th at 11:00am. Please wear comfortable clothes for being outdoors, but don’t worry—all art supplies will be provided.

This program welcomes everyone aged 5 and up! We’re excited to create some nature art with you!

This walk will take us on a fun exploration of beavers—checking out their anatomy, understanding why they do what they do, and discovering what makes them so fascinating! This walk is free to attend, and no registration is required! Taking place Saturday October 11^th from 3:00-4:00pm in Police Point Park. We will be meeting at the Nature Centre and enjoying some biology facts before we set out on a walk into the park to look at some beaver signs and hopefully catch a glimpse of the beaver family that has moved into the park. 

Please wear comfortable clothes suitable for being outdoors, and be advised that we will be going slightly off the beaten path, so anyone with mobility differences should take caution. TICKETS ON SALE NOW for our haunted storytelling event: Forest of Fear: The Invasion! We’re really excited for another year of scares and can’t wait to share our new theme with you. The event will be held on October 25th from 7-10pm in Police Point Park. Tickets are $20.00 per person and can be purchased in person at the Nature Centre-please note we’re not accepting phone payments and tickets are non-refundable.
